Biodiversity Conservation Certificates

A Biodiversity Conservation Certificate (BCC) represents the biodiversity benefits of 100 square meters of protection and restoration of the Malua Forest Reserve. BCCs enable individuals and businesses to contribute to making biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration a commercially viable land use in Malaysia.

The purchase of BCCs directly supports the restoration and protection of the Malua rainforest. The Malua Forest Reserve is refuge to endangered wild orangutans as well as gibbons, clouded leopards, pygmy elephants, and over 300 species of birds. By implementing a conservation management plan the Malua BioBank supports wildlife populations through habitat enhancements, re-establishment of diversified native plant species, promotion of a healthy forest canopy, and monitoring the environmental services of the Malua Forest Reserve. Last but not least, your contribution funds a perpetual trust that will ensure lasting protection of the Malua Forest Reserve and its wildlife.

Each BCC is unique and listed on Markit Environmental Registry, providing transparency and guaranteeing credibility for buyers.

Individuals

Individuals can purchase BCCs to help counter the global trend of habitat loss. Asia's forests and wildlife are at high risk from commercial logging and agribusiness driven by expanding populations and increased consumption. Each BCC contributes to an innovative effort to conserve and restore the Malua Forest as a wildlife refuge and supports the Malua BioBank in demonstrating the important value of biodiversity.

What you will receive with your purchase: When you purchase a BCC, the Malua BioBank will send you an electronic copy of the BCC (for purchases of 5 or fewer) or original BCCs can be mailed to you (for purchases of 6 or more). You can also purchase BCCs as gifts and have them sent directly to the recipient. Please contact the Malua BioBank to place an order.

Businesses

The Malua BioBank works with businesses and organizations to integrate BCCs into their operations and products as part of larger efforts to identify and address supply chain impacts. Energy, food and cosmetics companies relying on agribusiness products, particularly palm oil, are increasingly scrutinized for perceived impacts on rainforests. As new models for sustainable production of these goods scale up to meet growing demand, the Malua BioBank fills a critical need for market-based solutions to environmental impacts. Businesses can benefit by:

  • Addressing supply chain impacts and life cycle assessments related to rainforest impacts
  • Integrating conservation strategies directly into supply chains
  • Adding value with eco-labels that support the Malua BioBank
  • Identifying branding opportunities from supporting biodiversity conservation
  • Developing sourcing strategies with near-term conservation benefits and long-term sustainability
  • Corporate support and partnerships help ensure that the Malua BioBank fulfills its objective to help tip the balance of land use economics in favor of sustainable resource management in Asia's threatened forests.
